Adjective
Either kind of adjective (い or な) in the form it would take in the sentence.

Nouns and clauses
Noun
The bare noun. Like な-adjectives it often needs a linking word, which the rule always shows: だ (学生だから), な (学生なので), の (学生のとき), で (学生で). Rule of thumb: patterns that begin with a noun-like word (とき、はず、よう、ため、こと、もの、の…) take な after な-adjectives and の after nouns; patterns that follow a finished plain sentence (と思う、から、けど、そうだ…) take だ; and でしょう、かもしれない and らしい take nothing at all.
学生、本 → 学生だと思う、学生なので、学生のとき、学生でしょう
Plain form
普通形 of any predicate, the form that ends a casual sentence: Verb (行く、行った), い-adjective (高い、高かった), な-adjective + だ (静かだ、静かだった), Noun + だ (学生だ、学生だった). Used when a pattern attaches to a whole clause.
行くというより、高いそうだ、学生だとか
Sentence
A complete statement. The pattern links two statements or comments on one.
高い。しかし、おいしい。
Predicate
The part that states something about the topic: a verb, an adjective, or Noun + だ, in whatever form the sentence needs.
学生は毎日勉強する、この本は高い、彼は先生だ

三つ、十人、三時、来週、学校
Question word
Interrogatives such as 誰、何、どこ、いつ、どう、どんな.
