Not logged in? As a guest the dictionary, grammar and kana tools are all yours, a writing practice sheet holds 1 character with the standard layout, and the Reading Assistant, Listening Practice and Image Assistant need an account. A free Kana account unlocks them with 100 characters to read and 50 to listen to at a time, 10 texts to read, 10 to listen to and 10 images to read a month, and gives writing practice 1 characters per sheet with 10 pages a month. Those monthly counts are per billing period, like AI tokens, and reset with it; every image read counts, including reading a straightened picture again or a selected area.
What is an AI token? Tokens are the pieces of text the AI reads and writes for you. A word explanation in the dictionary or Reading Assistant is roughly 1,100 tokens, summarising or quizzing a page of notes is a few thousand, reading a photo is about a thousand, and the natural AI voice counts one token for every character it speaks.
Your allowance renews on your billing date each month and unused tokens do not carry over. If you run out before then, the AI features pause until your next billing date and everything else keeps working: the dictionary, standard text recognition, and the standard voice are always there.
